Phone photography vs professional — what's the real difference?

Phones take great photos. Why does professional restaurant photography still matter? Six honest reasons.

Phone photography vs professional — what's the real difference?

[ 01 ]

What phones do well

Phones are genuinely good now. Quick social posts, behind-the-scenes content, instagram stories — a phone works fine. Don't pay a photographer for these.

[ 02 ]

Where phones fail

Menu photography. Consistency across 30+ dishes is almost impossible with a phone. Lighting, white-balance and styling drift dish-to-dish — and the menu looks unprofessional.

Uber Eats hero images. Phone photos look fine on instagram but get destroyed by Uber Eats compression and square recropping.

Anything where colour and depth matter. Reds, oranges and warm tones are the hardest channels — phones blow saturation and crush shadow detail.

The 80/20 rule

80% of your photography should be professional — menu library, Google profile, website hero, Uber Eats, ad campaigns. 20% should be phone — instagram stories, behind-the-scenes, quick social.
